Google promotes ad-journal project: Digital assistant for sublocal reporters

The joint project of Westdeutscher Verlags- und Werbegesellschaft (WVW), Gogol Publishing and textOmatic, was selected for funding as part of the Google Digital News Innovation Fund (DNI). Users without previous journalistic knowledge are supported by automated text production when creating sublocal content. The newly created content is used as a basis for new sources of revenue.

The Google Digital News Innovation Fund has been supporting journalistic projects in Europe since 2015. A joint project of WVW, Gogol Publishing and textOmatic has now been selected for funding in the application procedure for 2018. Among other things, the project benefits from Gogol Publishing's extensive experience in user-generated content. Meanwhile, more than 500,000 reader reporters, of whom almost 100,000 are from WVW, report on the Gogol platform on sublocal topics in their region.

Just tell us about the place of the event: Assisted text production for reader reporters

Through new possibilities of assisted text production, the future-oriented project promotes the creation of so-called sublocal content, i.e. contributions from the reader's immediate environment. Reader reporters no longer have to formulate extensive texts in order to make a contribution to their region, but can simply enter the basic data into the system. Texts are then automatically generated based on the data supplied. For example, information and results on regional football matches can be entered and match reports can be generated from the edge of the pitch at the touch of a button.

New sources of revenue for advertising journals: sponsorship of content

Although sublocal content is particularly popular, advertising journals can only cover a small proportion of regional topics. "The unique combination of automated text production and user-generated content will expand our range of sublocal topics," says Thomas Knackert, editor-in-chief of WVW.  The new variety of local topics also makes new advertising formats possible for advertising journals. "By sponsoring this content, local companies can make a credible contribution to the region and the clubs," says Knackert. WVW's joint project with Gogol Publishing and textOmatic therefore offers potential to attract regional readers and at the same time open up new sources of revenue.
