New WAN-IFRA President to open the IFRA and DCX exhibitions in Berlin

  • The IFRA and DCX exhibitions, as the key elements of the “Berlin Publishing Days” on 8 and 9 October 2019, offer a high quality programme.
  • Keynote speakers are Fernando de Yarza López-Madrazo, new WAN-IFRA President; Oliver Eckert, CEO of BurdaForward; Marina Haydn, Managing Director and EVP, Global Circulation of The Economist; and Juan Señor, President of the Innovation Media Consulting Group.

Fernando de Yarza López-Madrazo, President of HENNEO, which publishes the Heraldo de Aragón, and the newly elected President of WAN-IFRA, the World Association of News Publishers, will open the IFRA and DCX international marketplaces in October in Berlin. Prominent speakers will also include Oliver Eckert, CEO of BurdaForward; Marina Haydn, Managing Director and EVP, Global Circulation of The Economist; and Juan Señor, President of the Innovation Media Consulting Group.

The IFRA World Publishing Expo and DCX Digital Content Expo are the international meeting places for news publishers, corporate publishers and content strategists. Besides a vast range of stands featuring solutions for print and online media, the dual exhibition event offers an extensive accompanying programme, especially on the Conference Stage.

New president – new priorities

The new WAN-IFRA president was elected at the World News Media Congress in Glasgow in June, succeeding Michael Golden of The New York Times. Fernando de Yarza López-Madrazo is President of HENNEO, a news group whose products include the titles “20 minutes” and “Heraldo de Aragón” in Spain. In addition, in his capacity as a Member of the Board of Vocento, he is responsible for one of Spain's largest news producers, media such as the daily newspaper ABC and 12 regional dailies, and is Chairman of Taller de Editores, Spain's largest magazine publisher.

Fernando de Yarza has a family background in publishing. His great grandfather was killed in front of his publishing house because he championed press freedom, with the result that his grandmother, at 24 years of age, took over the publishing company and led it through the period of dictatorship back to democracy. “I would like to dedicate my new presidency to her and to all the women journalists who defend press freedom around the world,” said the new WAN-IFRA President upon taking office. Besides supporting press freedom worldwide, he stated as his priorities the search for sustainable business models in a digital environment as well as the promotion of innovation in the media sector – the main focal points of the IFRA and DCX exhibitions. On Tuesday, 8 October 2019, at 10.00, he will officially open the dual exhibition with his keynote speech in which he will give an insight into his strategy for WAN-IFRA and its members.

Trends in the media business from theory and practice

At 15.30 on the first exhibition day, Oliver Eckert, CEO of BurdaForward, the digital media house that produces leading German-language magazines such as CHIP and FOCUS Online, will speak. In his keynote, “Creatively destroy! How the news industry can be successful in the Internet age,” Eckert will describe new perspectives for digital transformation. He will present a framework that BurdaForward has successfully applied in its own digital transformation. One important element of this is the “jobs-to-be-done” theory, for which his company focuses strongly on its readers' habits. He will also highlight the organisational adaptability and cultural transformation this requires. New skills, resources and processes – Eckert will illustrate his approach with examples from practice that are suitable for adoption by other publishers and their organisations.

Marina Haydn, Managing Director and EVP, Global Circulation, The Economist, will address the delegates on Wednesday, 9 October, at 10.00. As an exemplary case for a positive transformation, The Economist clearly increased its subscription income within five years. Haydn, an Austrian who has been with the media house for 18 years, will explain the marketing mission behind the new reader business. She is firmly convinced that teams have the potential to present their readers with greater added value and will provide reasons to back this claim.

The concluding keynote speech will be given by Juan Señor, President of the Innovation Media Consulting Group, at 15.30 on the second exhibition day. On the basis of various studies, he will present central theories of how innovation can succeed in the media business. As part of a shift from the advertising business towards the reader business he advocates, among other things, high journalistic quality. He will also describe different business models and strategies being applied by news media worldwide.
