Blockchain and news media

Blockchain technology has been one of the most talked about technologies in the last two years in FinTech, banking, supply chain, real estate and other areas. But can it also be used to advance the media industry in general and journalism in particular? This discussion panel aims at answering this question with a distinguished set of speakers who will be presenting ongoing projects that are already leveraging blockchain for media and journalism, albeit in distinct ways.

Vita Gagik Yeghiazarian

Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Forbes Armenia, Publisher of Forbes Georgia, contributor to Forbes Kazakhstan, and Publisher of Cosmopolitan Armenia. Founder and investor in several ICT/hi-tech startups, consulting, publishing and media communication companies operating across CIS and North America. Worked at and partnered with Andersen Russia and CIS. Initiator and the first CEO of the Armenian Development Agency. Harvard graduate, Co-Chair of International Programming and Development of Harvard Alumni Entrepreneurs, representing 9000 members globally. Gagik is the Co-Founder and CEO of PUBLIQ non-profit Foundation implementing the vision for distributed media ecosystem utilizing proprietary blockchain and AI technologies.

Vita Vivian Schiller

Vivian Schiller is a longtime executive at the intersection of journalism, media and technology. She currently heads the Civil Foundation, which makes philanthropic grants in support of sustainable journalism, and helps uphold the journalism ethics and standards of Civil, the decentralized marketplace for sustainable journalism.


Prior to joining Civil, Vivian held a number of executive roles in the media industry. She was the Global Chair of News at Twitter. In this role, she led the company’s strategy for news and partnership with journalism organizations and the news publishing ecosystem.


Before that Vivian was Senior VP & Chief Digital Office, NBC News where she led strategy and operations for the network‘s presence on the web, mobile, devices, and social media.


Prior to NBC, Schiller served as President and CEO of NPR, leading all of NPR's worldwide media operations. She was Senior Vice President and General Manager of NYTimes.com and Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Discovery Times Channel, a joint venture of The New York Times and Discovery Communications. Earlier in her career, Schiller was the head of CNN Productions, where she led CNN's long-form programming efforts. Documentaries and series produced under her auspices earned multiple honors, including three Peabody Awards, four Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Awards, and dozens of Emmys.

Schiller is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations; and a Director of the Scott Trust, which owns The Guardian.

Vita Moderation: Walid Al Saqaf

Walid Al-Saqaf is a Senior Lecturer in Journalism and Media Technology
at Södertörn University in Stockholm where his interests revolve
around how journalism is affected by blockchain, artificial
intelligence, disinformation and predictive analysis. He has a BSc
degree in computer engineering and a PhD in media studies and serves
on the Board of ISOC and is the Chair of the ICANN Middle East
Strategy and Adjoining Countries Working Group. Walid was the
Publisher and Editor in Chief of Yemen's first English language
newspaper Yemen Times and was an editor at the Washington DC Bureau of
the Wall Street Journal. As a software developer, he developed
Alkasir, an Internet censorship circumvention tool that was featured
on CNN, the Guardian, the Huffington Post and other media. He has also
been active in supporting open Internet access for the empowerment of
citizens, earning several awards including a TED senior fellow and
Örebro University's Democracy Award.
