CV: Mathias Döpfner is Chairman and CEO of the German media group Axel Springer SE in Berlin. He is also the President of the Federation of German Newspaper Publishers. Mathias began his career in 1982 as a music critic of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ). He joined Gruner + Jahr in 1992, initially as an employee of board member Axel Ganz in Paris. Later he became assistant to the CEO Gerd Schulte-Hillen. In April 1994, Mathias became editor-in-chief of the weekly Wochenpost. And in 1996, he became editor-in-chief of the Hamburger Morgenpost. In March 1998 he switched to the daily newspaper Die Welt as editor-in-chief.
In July 2000 Mathias became a member of the Board of Axel Springer. Since January 2002 Mathias is Axel Springer’s Chairman and CEO. After he became CEO, sales of digital activities rose from 117 to 2.2 billion euros. The EBIDTA from digital activities increased from -12 million to 472 million euros. Mathias is a member of the Board of Directors of Time Warner, Inc., Warner Music Group, and Vodafone Group, too. Axel Springer is the leading digital publisher in Europe and is active in more than 40 countries. Publishing brands include BILD, DIE WELT and BUSINESS INSIDER.
